s4 week 2

welcome to week 2.

it's crazy to see that there are 20,000 builders this season! glad you're here with us. alright, you know the drill. the recordings are now available in the os.

if you missed the tuesday session, then watch "lecture 2: build a toy".

if you missed the thursday session, then watch "lab 2: workshop your toy".

catch up on week 1 submissions.

we know that many of you got into s4 just a few days ago from rolling admissions.
so, we extended the submission deadline for week 1 to this thursday @11:59 pm pt.

we've made these updates very easy for you.

submit your idea slide, give feedback, and you're good to go — submit week 1 here if you didn't already.

week 2 update is due monday, august 21 @ 11:59pm pt.

definitely watch lecture #2 to understand what we want you to submit for week-two's update. it's also a pretty fun lecture — highly recommend :)

the weekly update is a simple form you fill out each week, check it out real quick and scroll through it to get an idea of what you gotta submit.

here are the things you need for weekly update #2:

1 — build the toy version of your idea + show us your work.

this week is all about creating the toy version of your idea like i talked about during the lecture #2 — plz watch that before moving on. i don't cover how to build your toy here, that's all in lecture #2.

your toy could be anything. literally.

  • the first 10s of your song

  • a hype trailer for your product

  • a screen recording showing your toy

  • an hacked together early demo of you game

  • a hardcoded product flow

  • a sketch of your vertical farm

  • a localhost demo for your ios app

  • the intro to your new youtube video

  • first episode of your new podcast

  • the first two pages of your novel

  • a whatsapp group where you post food you're tryna sell

  • a landing page showing off your hackathon

  • a picture of your art

  • an event you run at your house

  • a picture of an early schematic of your hardware product

  • etc.

depending on what your project is, there are different ways to present your "toy". maybe it's a video, a picture, a sketch, whatever. you choose.

we recommend making a simple video where you just show your toy.

once you're ready post it on twitter, linkedin, or insta.

here's an example of a toy for tech project type.
here's an example of a toy for a game dev type.
here's an example of a toy for a musician type.
here's an example of a toy for a content creator type.

remember to tag us if you want more visibility.

do whatever seems fun. keep it simple.

we've also made some guides to help you with showing your toy:

  1. harry potter replit game example

  2. song/content example

  3. time machine/researcher example

many of you may wanna record your screen.

loom is a free tool to record your screen + video + mic. go ahead and download loom.

i recommend the desktop app, the chrome extension is weird sometimes. with the desktop app, you can also record local audio like this (ex. if your toy has sound like a video, song, etc).

you can use whatever tool you want, we just use loom on the team. it's free.

once you record your video via loom, you'll need to download your video directly from loom so you can post it other places like twitter, linkedin, etc.

do not post loom links on socials.

to download your loom take the link and paste it here. the site is kinda sus. but, it works lol.

2 — give 5 new people feedback on their idea slide.

we still got hella people posting their idea slide.

go ahead and give 5 new people feedback on their idea slide just like last week.

this is also where you will explore people in s4, and also follow the ones you think are working on something cool. this is what i meant by "meeting people in the wild".

3 — reels/shorts/tiktok ur toy if u want

some of you did this last week, which was awesome.

give it another shot this week and show you toy on reels/shorts/tiktok.

we got a new template for you.

you can literally just record your screen with your phone's camera like jeffrey does below and talk over it.

here a new example from jeffrey showing his toy — this is way easier than last week's example.

if you are not comfortable with instagram, here's also a quick tutorial showing you how to make one.

we highly encourage you to experiment with short form content — it might be the easiest format to go viral, depending on your project.

that's all! if you have questions, ping s4@buildspace.so -- we reply to every email.

we're really excited to see all your toys.

don't forget — if you haven't submitted update 1 yet, you still can till thursday.

update 2 is due monday, aug 21 @ 11:59pm pt.

rsvp for thursday's lab
